Despite having over 40 years experience in the Water Industry Jim is the first to admit that you never stop learning. After starting his career in installing and commissioning mechanical plant throughout the UK he had keen desire to own and manage his own engineering and installation company.
Jim achieved this is 1990 with A&L and has never looked back. Led by Jim, A&L have played a significant part in the delivery of literary hundreds of projects throughout the Water Industry across the UK. He commented “whether it be designing and installing a small chemical dosing plant or constructing a major pumping station, there are always problems to be solved and that is where we thrive”
With a keen eye for detail and a stickler for quality and service, Jim has built a highly reputable company who are trusted to deliver. The company has grown year on year and is currently undertaking a significant recruitment drive to meet the demands of customers throughout the Scottish Water Industry. Jim also stated “we find the right people and then we invest in them to ensure that standards are met at all times and the expectations of our clients are met”
Kenny has had a long and varied career gaining over 35 years of experience in the Water Industry throughout the UK and Overseas. Having started his career in Water Operations in the early 80’s within the Lower Clyde Division, Kenny went on to manage commissioning of New Installations for Water Companies in England & Wales and is proud to have been involved in the construction and commissioning of the Ashford Common Water Treatment Works and 80km Thames Water Ring Main, a major part of London’s Water Supply Infrastructure.
Eventually, following several years as a Site Manager within a wide variety of Water and Waste Water Projects, Kenny undertook a Project Management role for Morrison Construction in Kent and Sussex which led to further similar roles for Industry Leaders such as Grontmij & Veolia.
In early 2004 further opportunities were realised within Scottish Water and led to the undertaking of many Senior Management Roles including Operations Manager and Delivery Manager. Much success was gained within 3 Major Capital Investment Programmes over 13 years delivering many Infra and non-Infrastructure Assets.
Allan began his career as a Draughtsman in a Mechanical Engineering company who specialised in the Water Industry. After completing his modern apprenticeship and gaining a HNC in manufacture engineering and a HND in mechanical engineering, Allan was heavily involved in producing proposals and as-built drawings for various sites across Scotland & England such as Glencourse WTW, Killylour WTW & Davyhulme WwTW.
Following 8 years in the Water Industry, Allan moved on to Swimming Pool systems, designing filtration and disinfection plants. After showing a keen interest and excelling in the design and delivery of projects, promotion soon followed to the Major Projects Team. Allan was to play a significant part in the Design and Delivery of large scale projects such as Gargunnock Campus in Ayrshire and The Ned Hotel in central London.
Allan returned to the Water Industry in 2015 to undertake a Project Engineering role for A&L where responsibilities now include survey, design, estimating, procurement and a degree of project management to deliver new assets for Water Industry Clients. Allan thrives on engagement with the customer to capture the detail required to ensure that robust engineered solutions are delivered.
Dean served his apprenticeship as a plumbing and Gas heating engineer with WM Murchland Ltd in Kilmarnock gaining over 11 years’ experience working on large commercial buildings throughout Glasgow and Edinburgh. Progressing to an advanced level, Dean was active as a supervisor on some memorable sites which include the Scottish Parliament building and Hugh Robson University Buildings in Edinburgh.
In 2012 Dean took the opportunity to join the A&L team and after 3 years as a site supervisor he was promoted to the role of project engineer to enjoy the further challenge of day to day management of the workforce as well as tendering, quoting, planning and procurement.
With over 17 years’ experience in the Water Industry, Dean’s knowledge and experience is invaluable to A&L in providing bespoke engineering solutions and services for our Clients.
Cerys began her journey with A&L back in 2011 when it was mainly a family run business. Starting in the role of receptionist, Cerys has gained much experience in several roles within the company. She is still currently front of house, however also provides valuable project support to the Delivery and Installation Teams.
Cerys states that no two days are the same in her current role as Company Administrator which is the main reason she loves her job. Over the years, Cerys has watched the company grow from strength to strength and says that she could not be prouder of her dad (who is the Managing Director) and A&L for achievements to date and is looking forward to making a contribution to the Company’s current expansion plans.
While continuing her role with A&L on a part time basis, Cerys has also ventured into the Beauty Industry. After success in a Salon as a talented Make-up Artist, 2 years ago she and her business partner decided to open their own award-winning Salon in Kilmarnock called “Pretty Little Parlour” which continues to thrive.
Vicki’s career started in secretarial and clerical administration, working in the public and private sectors. The desire to move into accountancy came when her Dad started his own building business and she kept the books up to date for him. Being an ambitious and driven individual, Vicki endeavoured to obtain further experience in the accountancy sector working for a Chartered Accountant in Irvine.
After deciding that a career in accounting was definitely for her, Vicki took the decision to study for relevant qualifications to support her ambitions and in 2014 was proud to receive her degree in Accountancy. Employment with A&L soon followed and Vicki has made great progress in streamlining the accounts department.
Vicki has been with the company now for over 2 years where her responsibilities include payroll, project accountancy and all other aspects of accounting within the business to support the delivery teams.
Shelley joined A&L when it formed back in 2003 and has played a significant part in the success achieved by the company to date. Starting in an administration role, Shelley’s drive and ambition was soon recognised and this led to promotion to a new role as Finance and Purchase Ledger.
Shelley’s development continued leading to many new responsibilities including procurement and office management however working closely with the Managing Director and Project Managers on a day to day operational basis gained her a wealth of experience. This experience was to prove invaluable and resulted in further promotion to the post of Commercial Manager in 2015.
Although Shelley is also responsible for HR & Recruitment, her main responsibilities lie in the day to day commercial operations and financial management of the company. She also oversees the Company’s support of Charitable Projects through the A&L Community Fund and remains a driving force behind the continued development and growth ambitions of the Company.
Health & Safety Co-ordinator
Lisa has an extensive background in Accounting with Contractors and many years of experience have been gained within the Construction Industry. However she completed the transition to Health & Safety 6 years ago and hasn’t looked back.
After completing her NEBOSH Qualification in 2013, A&L were quick to procure her services. Lisa Accepted the role of Health & Safety Co-ordinator for A&L in 2014. She is passionate in her work and enjoys leading the Company’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing commitments. Lisa commented “Health & Safety is critical in any Business, especially in Construction and my job is to ensure all of our staff are fully supported in their daily tasks. Nothing is so important that we cannot do it safely!”
Lisa also is responsible for developing and maintaining A&L’s Business Management System and is tasked with steering the Company towards ISO 9001 Accreditation.
Kevin has been involved in the engineering industry for almost 20 years, initially serving his time with Dustacco Engineering as an apprentice engineer in a variety of business sectors from Semi-conductor, Nuclear power through to water and waste water treatment.
In early 2007 Kevin moved from his Site Based Supervisory role and in to an office based Project engineers role which seen him responsible for projects from survey stage through to delivery, during this role Kevin achieved his IOSH Managing Safely accreditation and built a good relationships with clients all over the UK.
In 2012 Kevin was promoted to the position of Project Engineer delivering solutions for Raw water supply reservoirs throughout Scotland, this role evolved and saw Kevin further promoted to the role of Project Manager and assume complete responsibility for all aspects of Reservoir works for A&L including, new pipework and valve installations and specializing in repair and refurbishment of existing assets – some being well over 100 years old.
Graeme is a highly experienced engineer with over 25 years served in the Water Industry. A Gas Turbine Engineer to trade, he progressed Initially into the Marine Engineering sector specializing in the remote actuation of Valves on Naval vessels.
While employed in Marine Engineering, Graeme formed a specialist branch serve the Water & Waste Industry. This business unit was a major success serving many of the established Main Contractors within the industry throughout the 90’s and beyond. During this period as a Project Manager, Graeme was prominent in construction of the largest submerged membrane filtration water treatment plant in the UK
Joining A&L Mechanical in 2009 he has managed several new Membrane Plant Installations along with the refurbishment of many Scottish Water assets. More recently Graeme has been tasked with delivering the programme of Reservoir Valve Tower works to Scottish Water; This work scope includes for the complete internal re-engineering of Access Platforms and steelwork to enable safe ingress and egress for SW Operatives.
Simon is the longest serving A&L employee and has had a long and varied career gaining 24 years of experience in the engineering Industry throughout the UK. Having started his career with A&L in the early 90’s working on large contracts such as NEC Livingston, Tiger bay Cardiff and ICI Redcar. Simon went on to build his career within A&L from Apprentice Mechanical Fitter – Mechanical Fitter – Charge Hand – Site Supervisor and was involved in the construction of many varied Water Treatment & Waste Water treatment stations/ plants across Britain’s supply Infrastructure. Eventually, following several years as a Site supervisor within a wide variety of Water and Waste Water Projects, Simon undertook a Project Engineers role for A&L focusing more on work within Scotland completing a wide variety of projects with industry leaders such as GMJV, Veolia, George Leslie, Clancy Docwra, Memcor, Morgan Est, Nomenca, Scottish water and Scottish water solutions Simon has overseen refurbishment of many existing assets throughout Scottish Water and is a first point of call for when there is an engineering solution required.
Problem solving is one of Simons passions and offers great expertise in valves, pumps, pipework, dosing systems, tanks, steelwork, filters, scrapers etc. Technical solutions, Design and Installation are all well within his capabilities. As a Project Manager for A&L, Simon is responsible for the continued quality and service that all of our clients have come to depend and rely on. Simon commented “my job is basically delivering innovative engineering & construction solution throughout the Water Industry with health and safety always foremost in mind”
